Taj Mahal, once the seventh wonder of the World is known as the symbol of pure love and the unique example of beautiful art and architecture. It was declared as the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 because of its charismatic architectural composition. As we all know, it was built by the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, in the memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal to praise her eternal beauty and his endless love. Taj Mahal is situated in Agra in the state Uttar Pradesh in the northern Indian. Located on the bank of river Yamuna, this magnificent white marbled building has many stories behind it.

It has been said that after designing the Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan, ordered to cut off the hands of all the workers who worked to build this building so that they can never create its replica. The other amazing fact is that when Mumtaz Mahal was alive, she took a promise from her husband whom he would build a mausoleum for her after she dies. Shah Jahan kept his promise and when his wife died, after giving birth to his fourteenth child, he declared to build the epitome of love for her, and the construction started in 1631. It took 22 years to finish the task with more than twenty thousand workers working on it, and it was completed in 1653. As soon as the Taj Mahal’s construction got completed, Shah Jahan’s son Aurangzeb imprisoned his father in the Agra Fort, which is a little far from the Taj Mahal on the other side of river Yamuna. Shah Jahan used to watch the Taj Mahal from Agra Fort in the memory of his wife during his imprisonment.

The design of the symbol of love is a combination of Mughal and Persian architecture. Building has four corners like other Islamic structures and four minarets, which are about 40 metres in height. The white marble used in the construction of Taj Mahal was produced from Rajasthan. At that time, transportation was done on the thousands of elephants. The walls of Taj were filled with precious gemstones from inside like sapphires, jades, garnets, ambers and topaz, which were brought from all over Asia. However, most of the gemstones were taken by British when they ruled India for about 100 years. There are other mausoleums of red sandstones, which are of other wives of Shah Jahan. This fact is not known by many people.

There are many other amazing facts about Taj that Emperor was also planning to build the other Taj with same architecture on the other side of Yamuna, but his dispute with his son leads to the crash of his plan. People also said that the Taj Mahal was sinking into the river Yamuna with each year passing by. A very interesting myth suggests that colour changes in Taj are related to the different moods of a woman. Another thing related to the Taj Mahal is that European says that Taj Mahal was originally designed by an Italian architect, Geronimo Veroneo.

The Story Behind the Origin of Taj Mahal


Taj Mahal is one of the most well-known monuments in the world. It is located in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, which was once the capital of the Mughal Kingdom. It is the most visited monument in India, attracting both domestic and foreign tourists. It is called by many names like seventh wonder of the world, timeless beauty and so. The most common name is the symbol of love and has a very interesting story behind it.


Taj Mahal is a great example of Mughal architecture, which is the combination of Persian, Turkish and Indian styles. During the seventeen century, the Mughal Empire in India was at its peak of prosperity. Shah Jahan was the emperor of the Mughal Empire at that time.
